Neal E. Downing, AIA
Architecture is the art of creating space embodied with spirit and coupled with function. I have dedicated my professional life to the pursuit of excellence in design. The path thus traveled has provided the training, experience and tools necessary to realize this goal. As a practitioner of a multidimensional discipline and social art, I rely on the evolution of my methodology and the subsequent application for the cultivation of a positive contribution to our built environment.
My professional architectural career began in 1977 working as a draftsman for Joseph P. Wilk, an architect who hired me from a construction site where I was employed as a general laborer. In the four subsequent decades, I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University / Saint Louis (1982) and was ranked second in my class obtaining a Masters of Architecture from University of California / Los Angeles (1987). I have served in Academia as an Adjunct Professor with O’More College of Design / Franklin, Tennessee (1995-1999) and as a full time Professor at Western Kentucky University (2000-2018). While at WKU, I also directed AMSI, a research institute which engaged and compensated over 100 students while completing Projects valued at more than $40 million total construction costs. I retired from WKU in 2018 to focus on my private architectural practice.
Nationally certified by NCARB (1990-present), I am currently licensed in Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and South Carolina; with over 150 Built Works as Architect of Record.
